Now there is a new trend to replace digital cameras with cell phones with camera capabilities. A representative study carried out by optical component specialists Schneider Kreuznach confirms the potential of cell phone photography. Around 1,000 users in Germany, China, India, and the U.S.A. were interviewed about their specific usage patterns relating to picture-taking with digital cameras and cell phones. International comparison of usage patterns One out of four respondents indicated that in future they would exclusively use cell phones for picture-taking (early adopters), provided the quality matched that of today's upper mid-range digital cameras with approximately 6 million pixels.

Pro Photography Online Marketplace Digital Railroad Raises $10 Million

New York - Digital Railroad, an online marketplace for buyers and sellers of professional photography, announced on Monday that it has raised $10 million in its second round of venture capital financing, led by DN Capital.Previous investors Morgenthaler Ventures and Venrock Associates also participated. "The Gypsy Trips" records the life of the people whom the author calls "the last free people of Europe." Medbe is an established Norwegian photographer who worked in the 70s as a photographer for the National Theater in Olso. He now works independently and has published various albums, which are usually accompanied by written work or audio media. "The Gypsy Trips" features a catalogue published in Norway, consisting of 60 pictures and 20 short stories describing meetings between the artist and the gypsy community. The photographs on display in Wrocaw capture the relatively undocumented life of the Roma.

People in Photography

The result, as seen in People in Photography, is an avalanche of more than 200 photographs with extraordinary, occasionally baffling juxtapositions of subject matter and author. Cecil Beaton's portrait of Princess Alexandra shares wall space with an anonymous 1910 portrait of the confident but ultimately doomed boxer Les Darcy and hawkish Kings Cross witch Rosaleen Norton. The great American portraitist Arnold Newman's take on an earnest but irrevocably shifty Richard Nixon shows the American president attempting a sincere smile from beneath a handwritten, affectionate inscription to an Australian friend. John Elliott's 1982 photograph of Slim Dusty coexists uneasily with Max Dupain's portrait of a chubby young Yehudi Menuhin, photographed 40 years earlier. Dupain's versatility shows in two other, very different pictures - his carefully lit 1940s views of the enigmatic politician "Doc" Evatt, and the actor Chips Rafferty resting on his haunches in a rocky landscape with his right hand cradling the ever present hand-rolled cigarette.

• Photography exhibition to raise cash for cancer

The exhibition opens on Friday, February 9, at the Auckland Museum Event Centre. The photographs, which will be on display at the Museum until July 2007, are the work of Corporal Mike Fletcher, who travelled through Afghanistan between April and September 2006 with 3 Para Battle Group. The first state-wide, juried MPS was sponsored and produced by the Boothbay Region Art Foundation and its MPS Committee. The secret was that the committee was made up of members from many communities and photography groups; each highly motivated and enthusiastic supporters of fine art photography in the State of Maine. "Having a well-respected judge as Anne Havinga, curator of photographs from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, started us out on the right foot," said the show chair Jim Taliana. This time, the show judge will be Susan Danly, curator of photography, graphics and contemporary art at the Portland Museum of Art. The exhibition will take place at the town hall in the Boothbay Railway Village, April 14-29, 2007, ending on the same weekend as the Fishermen's Festival in Boothbay Harbor Free admission.

Exhibit focuses on documentary photography

The small gallery space at The Arts Center in Orange is used well these days--for an exhibit called "The Art of Documentary Photography." Each of the five photographers has five significant images hanging in the show, on view through Jan. 27. The diverse group of works is assembled to show the range of the medium as it moves back and forth from editorial work to art. Charlottesville photographer Richard Robinson, who organized the show, hung ink-jet prints of photos taken at Wat Lao Buddhavong, a Laotian temple in Catlett, Va. "This work originated as an assignment for The Washington Post and has since become a personal project," Robinson said in an e-mail. An impressive work was hung by Bill Wylie, a Guggenheim Fellowship recipient who teaches photography at the University of Virginia.

Book Review: Digital Photography Expert Techniques (2nd Edition) ...

This book is meant for "photographers who are serious about producing the highest quality photographs in the most efficient and cost-effective way possible." He was trained in Germany and London and has worked for AGFA-GEVAERT in Germany and Nigeria. Chief Ajayi is, no doubt, one of the photographers that pioneered colour photography in Nigeria and he has trained many photographers. He was once a part-time lecturer at Lagos Polytechnic. Ayo Adewunmi recently had a chat with him at his duplex residence, situated in his home town, Odo Ere, Yagba West of Kogi State, where he lives since retiring from Agmeya six years ago. Although he owns a property in Ajao Estate, where he visits once in a while, he prefers the serene environment of his home town to the hustle and bustle of Lagos. That's probably because much of the jewelry that I am familiar with is in the window of big chain jewelry stores. The jewelry there is nice and all but you can get the same ring or necklace at a hundred other stores across the country. My view of jewelry changed when I visited the Web site for Jim Livermore Designs. Jim spends his time creating one-of-a-kind works of art that seem too beautiful to call jewelry. Wear a pair of Jim Livermore earrings and people just might say, "Oh, I love your artwork." The Web site unfortunately, isn't quite a work of art. The navigation links are at the bottom of the page. Depending on the size and resolution of your screen they may not even be visible without scrolling down.

Creation, the gift of photography

In the fast pace of day-to-day life, the one thing that we all forget to do is to wait and watch. We miss tiny but important details by rushing through life at a breakneck speed. The gift of photographers is that they have honed their ability to watch and wait patiently in order to capture the beauty of the moment. As with all forms of expression, photographs are very much influenced by the artists' beliefs, upbringing, and personal experiences. Sabrina Lightbourn says, "I am blessed to have been born into a colourful family whose lives were captured in majestic and magical black and white photos all over our house. As a child I'd lose myself in the photos – they portrayed a lifetime in that one moment on our wall." This early influence is reflected in Sabrina's main focus on black and white photos of people in her work.

But This is Chico: Photography books show off Chico's residential ...

Doug Keister, a Chico photographer of historical residential architecture, has released his 30th and 31st books. At 500 pages, the 61Ž4- by- 43Ž4-inch publications, called "500 Cottages" and "500 Bungalows," seem more like collections of large postcards than books. Aside from a short introduction, they both consist entirely of photos and brief captions. Keister has published books about cottages and bungalows before, but this time he's pulled out all the stops to showcase Chico houses. In an e-mail, he wrote that there are photos of 64 Chico cottages and 48 Chico bungalows in the respective books. The books don't list the houses' addresses, but as I made my way through them I found that all of them looked familiar. Most of them are within a half-mile radius of downtown Chico.

Your digital photography questions

Still struggling with some of the features on your digital camera? The main focus for the lecture was the works of Maier-Aichen, which merges photography and other artistic mediums. “I'm a photographer myself, so I enjoyed the good history of photography and the perspective of old photography vs. new mediums," graduate student Steve Bardonnet said. Working on Meier-Aichen's exhibits, Morse curator of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Los Angeles was given the opportunity to present Maier-Aichen's work, intentions and beliefs. “I thought the lecture was good because it was interesting to hear a curator's perspective," graduate student Jennie Ottinger said.

New Source for Wine, Food and Travel Photography

Paris, France, November 18, 2006 --(PR.COM)-- A new source for wine, food and travel stock photography is now available with the launch of the collaboration between BKWine and Alamy. Inspired by the power of the camera and the ability to communicate a thousand words with a solitary picture, the joint exhibition of Orawan Jivaketu and Tatchai Kantatip, "Matter and Mind", being held at The Landmark Hotel, gently challenges people's notion of happiness and success. The exhibition is divided into three categories: Love, Simple Life and Truth. "This [exhibition] is for society, because I think the world is more chaotic and brutal, and people are more selfish. This is how I see it," explains Orawan. The instigator behind the exhibition, her vision to provoke questions and have people re-evaluate their ideals was the motivation behind the current exhibition.

A blurry snapshot of my meeting with a photography icon

Perhaps we could put crass politics and other bad news behind us for a moment and contemplate the finer things in life. Art, for instance. We could begin with the stunning $50 million renovation of the Phoenix Art Museum, which opened to the public last weekend. One of the shows on display is a selection of black-and-white photographs by 20th-century master Ansel Adams. I went to look at the exhibit: small pictures of grass, rocks, flowers, trees, many of them taken in Yosemite National Park in the 1930s. They speak with a precision and beauty that is unchanged by time. .

India donates photography equipment to Afghanistan

NEW DELHI: India has donated high resolution scanning and storage equipment to the government of Afghanistan. However, the organisation has now turned its attention on the Natural History Museum, and is urging members of the public to shun its Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition, which opened last weekend. The competition is organised by BBC Wildlife Magazine and London's Natural History Museum and this year attracted more than 18,000 entries from 55 countries. However the pressure group is asking photographers to send in images illustrating how Shell has impacted on the environment, which will be used to publicise the Art Not Oil campaign. It has also published on its website contact details for Dr Michael Dixon, the director of the Natural History Museum, the editorial team of BBC Wildlife Magazine, which sponsors the competition, as well as some of the judges, and is urging members of the public to contact them directly to voice their disapproval It has also run an alternative photographic exhibition called Shell's Wild Lie, which visited London, Birmingham and Manchester, and was accompanied by talks by people 'from Shell-affected communities in the Niger Delta, South Africa and County Mayo in Ireland'.

Digital Photography News

My 17-40 lense is a dream, however I am a bit mystified by the nifty 50. Nine people participated in Photovoice, a program that gave them the opportunity to explore photography as an art formand as a means of communication. Its kind of like healing through art, said Nancy Daley, a community support worker with the local CMHA. In another series of color photos, the E Street Band and friends are playing softball for a team called the E Street Kings. Bruce, wearing a yellow cap, is swinging a bat. The hardcover book, titled Greetings from E Street, contains dozens of photos of the Boss and his band, mostly from the collection of Danny Federici, a band member and organ player. Author Robert Santelli, a former music critic at the Asbury Park Press, said his favorite pictures are the softball montage. "The sense of fun and camaraderie was always evident to me, and I think these pictures show it," he said.

Learn To Shoot Glamour Photography

Glamour Photography Studios has announced the launch of a new tutorial designed to help beginning photographers learn the art of glamour photography. Chief executive officer Russ Quinn said his artwork would be on display for at least a month.

Walter Folger: 35-year photography retrospective

FREDERICK -- Walter Folger has a master's degree in painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art. As an artist, his medium of choice, however, is the camera. A 35-year retrospective of his photography is currently on exhibt in the Mary Condon Hodgson Art Gallery on the Opossumtown Pike campus of Frederick Community College. The exhibit, "Photographic Retrospective," continues through Nov. 1. "Most of my photography has some connection to Frederick County, Maryland, and environs. For the past 35 years, often with my students, I have been photo-documenting the changing local scenery during frequent field trips," Mr. Folger writes in his artist's statement. "With photography, a lot of my effort has been involved in teaching," he said during an interview a few days after the exhibit's opening reception.

Food For Thought - National Museum of Photography, Film and ...

Once you've satisfied your stomach, always remember to make time to satisfy your eyes and I promise you - a quick tour of the NMPTF, before heading back to work, will do just that. The images in the exhibition reflect Davies' primary concern with the impact and history of human settlement upon the land, rather than the idealisation of the countryside that the word ‘landscape' often suggests . .

Advertising photography is being inspired by editorial and ...

This creative and journalistic convergence is one of the themes explored and celebrated by the imagery of New Photographers 2007 launched by Getty Images recently in Cannes and on their website at www.gettyimages.com/NP. Commenting in the latest EDIT 6 magazine and webzine at www.gettyimages.com/edit, Lewis Blackwell, Group Creative Director at Getty Images says that "less than 20 years ago, you could always tell the advertising images from the editorial ones. Ads were at least aspirational, if not totally dreamlike. Sometimes they were lurid in colour. Editorial was gritty realism and always black and white. "Now it is nearly always colour for news, with only upmarket advertising being likely to opt for a full-page black-and-white image. Authenticity is a key watchword in much advertising photography, while our finest photojournalism is often remarkable for its symbolic power and surrealistic eye for the strangeness of life", says Lewis.

Underrated Masters of Photography

The baffling calculus of fame is hard enough to get your head around, even without factoring in the strange metaphysics of photography. Andy Warhol’s theorem that everyone would have it for 15 minutes certainly factored in the power of images to transfix the culture’s attention, as well as the growth curve of the mass media and its resulting tendency to shorten our collective attention span. The broad implication of this insight was that modern culture would treat the untalented and unworthy with unquestioning fascination. On the other hand, Warhol knew that everyone—even the truly talented—would be disposable, because the search for the next big thing was always on. In this special section, we examine the fleeting nature of fame as it applies to photographers over the past 30 or so years.

Photography exhibit opens at Barker

10/25/2006 - The exhibit Photographers of Fredonia opened to a capacity crowd at Barker Historical Museum, a show highlighting the past through pictures, personalities and equipment. Rich Goodman, an expert on the history of photography and a specialist in historic cameras, presented a discussion Preserving the Past through Images. The large display of photographs mainly reflects the work of Russell and Robert McLaren, and Bob Blanding, but many other photographers of Fredonias past are represented. Major features of the show are the McLarens large stand-camera, which captured individuals and families throughout Northern Chautauqua for more than 50 years, and a sampling of rare, antique cameras from Goodmans collection. Some visitors find pictorial connections to their own families.

DSLR Photography & Imaging Workshop Will Cruise the Western ...

October 23, 2006 -- DSLR photography, Photoshop, and printing will be the focus of an eight-day workshop cruise embarking from Ft.
